LET’S HELP OUR KIDS COPE WITHOUT US

By Michele Borba | March 25, 2006

Did you know that is your son or daughter is in college, the chances are almost:

* One in two that he or she will become depressed to the point of being unable to function?

* One is two that he or she will have regular episodes of binge drinking (With the resulting significant risk of dangerous consequences such as sexual assault and care accidents

* One is ten that he or she will seriously considering suicide?

If you think these are outlandish statistics, think again. They are from one of the top mental health experts in the country, chief of Mental Health Services at Harvard University Health Services, and author of a must-read book, COLLEGE OF THE OVERWHELMED.

Over the last few years college counselors are seeing a marked new trend in our kids that is very troubling: Yes, our children are smart. In fact, they’ve never seen such a smart group entering universities. But they also are having a difficult time coping with life without us.

Could it be that we’ve put so much pressure on them to succeed and helped them so that they do that we forgot that our real goal as parents is to ensure that our kids can survive and thrive without us?

Let’s not get so caught up in our quest to raise academically smart kids that we forget to raise them to be emotionally healthy as well. Are you with me?
