Part IX. IMPORTANT SAFETY SKILLS TO TEACH OUR KIDS: Protecting Our Children From Violence
By Michele Borba | September 27, 2006
There’s no doubt about it, in today’s world our children are facing potentially violent situations. We know it, but so do they. Need a Reality Check? The Boys and Girls Club 2006 Survey of 46,000 teens (age 13 to 18 years of age) from coast-to-coast (all demographics, economics, rural, urban, suburban settings) revealed that they are concerned about growing rates of violence in their world. In fact, one of their top concerns was the growing rate of violence in America.
Law enforcement officers also tell us that survival skills can be taught. Hopefully our kids will never need to use them, but…. let’s help our children feel safer and know how to use their instinct if the situation does arise. Here are two critical rules to teach kids:
1. Use your gut instinct. If you feel you’re in danger, use leave. Your instinct (that deep down feeling that just tells you “something is not right”) is almost always correct. Teach kids to use that instinct.
2. Be wary of situations not people. Instead of telling kids to fear strangers, a better approach is to be wary of certain situations or actions. It alerts them. Keeps them calmer. And they are more like to make the better choice.
